Home-Cooked Thali Prices Drop 17% as Vegetable Costs Fall

Home-Cooked Meal Prices Drop as Inflation Cools

Indian households got significant relief in October as home-cooked thali prices dropped substantially, with vegetarian meals becoming 17% cheaper and non-vegetarian thalis costing 12% less compared to last year.

Key Takeaways

  • Vegetarian thali prices fell 17% year-on-year in October
  • Non-vegetarian thali prices dropped 12% during same period
  • Major vegetable price declines drove the cost reduction
  • Month-on-month declines were more modest at 1-3%

What Drove the Vegetarian Thali Price Drop?

The substantial 17% reduction in vegetarian thali costs was primarily driven by dramatic price drops in key vegetables. Onion prices plummeted by 51%, tomatoes fell 40%, and potatoes declined 31% compared to October last year.

According to Crisil Intelligence’s Roti Rice Rate report, “Traders have been offloading the rabi season stocks in anticipation of fresh kharif arrivals in November,” explaining the onion price crash.

Pulse prices also contributed significantly to the decline, falling 17% due to increased imports of Bengal gram, yellow pea, and black gram.

Non-Vegetarian Thali Costs Also Decline

Non-vegetarian thalis saw a 12% price reduction, though this was less dramatic than the vegetarian counterpart. Broiler prices, which account for approximately half of the non-veg thali cost, fell by 6% year-on-year.

Crisil noted in their report: “Broilers account for about half of the thali cost. Lower prices of vegetables and pulses, however, helped bring down the overall cost.”

Inflation Trends and Monthly Comparison

The overall decline occurred despite countervailing factors including an 11% year-on-year increase in vegetable oil prices during the festive season and a 6% surge in LPG cylinder costs.

Month-on-month data shows more modest declines, with vegetarian thali prices falling 1% and non-vegetarian thalis dropping 3% in October. Onion and tomato prices slipped 3% and 8% respectively month-on-month, while broiler prices fell 4% amid oversupply conditions.

This cooling retail inflation trend offers welcome relief to Indian households managing food budgets, with continuing to impact meal preparation costs across the country.
