Key Takeaways
- Ford invests Rs 3,250 crore to restart Chennai plant for engine production
- New facility to create 235,000 next-generation engines annually from 2029
- Over 600 direct jobs expected in Tamil Nadu’s automotive sector
Ford Motor Company has confirmed a major Rs 3,250-crore investment to restart powertrain manufacturing at its Chennai plant, marking a significant return to Indian operations. The Maraimalai Nagar facility will produce next-generation engines with an annual capacity of 235,000 units, beginning production in 2029.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The project is expected to generate over 600 direct jobs in Tamil Nadu, along with substantial indirect employment across the supplier network. This investment reinforces Ford’s commitment to leveraging India’s manufacturing capabilities for its global operations.
“We are pleased to advance our plans and confirm the Chennai plant’s vital role in Ford’s manufacturing network,” said Jeff Marentic, president, International Markets Group, Ford Motor Company.
Strategic Manufacturing Expansion
The Chennai plant will complement Ford’s existing engine facility in Sanand, Gujarat, which currently exports engines to international markets. The new facility will feature advanced engine technologies, though specific details about engine types and export markets will be announced closer to production start.
“This decision reinforces our commitment to leveraging India’s manufacturing prowess for future products,” Marentic added.
Government Support and Timeline
Ford submitted a Letter of Intent to the Tamil Nadu government in September 2024, outlining plans for export-oriented production. The initiative aligns with Ford’s global growth strategy focused on manufacturing optimization.
Welcoming Ford’s announcement, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said, “Ford’s decision to commence manufacturing in Chennai will further energise the resurgent automotive sector of Tamil Nadu and speaks volumes about the state’s robust manufacturing ecosystem, highly skilled workforce, and excellent investor facilitation.”
Manufacturing operations could resume as early as the second half of 2025, according to the minister, who noted previous delays due to US administration changes.
Management Restructuring
Ford has appointed auto industry veteran Anand Misra, currently plant manager at the Sanand facility, and finance controller Satish Varma to key board-level roles to lead the Chennai plant’s revival.
Historical Context
Ford exited vehicle manufacturing in India in September 2021, shutting down the 350-acre Maraimalai Nagar plant that once produced 150,000 cars and 340,000 engines annually. The company maintained engine exports from its Sanand plant, which was sold to Tata Motors in 2023 but leased back for continued operations.
Beyond manufacturing, Ford employs approximately 12,000 professionals in Tamil Nadu through its Global Business Operations across engineering, technology, and business support functions.
