Ukrainian Drone Strike Ignites Major Fire at Moscow Power Station

Key Takeaways

  • Ukrainian drone strike causes major fire at Moscow’s Shatura Power Station
  • Thousands left without heating in freezing temperatures
  • Three transformers destroyed in one of Kyiv’s deepest attacks into Russia
  • Russia claims downing 75 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions

A significant Ukrainian drone strike hit the Shatura Power Station near Moscow on Sunday, triggering a major fire that left thousands without heating as temperatures hovered around freezing. The attack represents one of Kyiv’s most substantial assaults on Russian energy infrastructure deep inside the country.

Major Infrastructure Damage

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed Ukrainian drones struck the power plant located approximately 120 km east of the Kremlin. Video footage circulated on Telegram showed massive flames and black smoke billowing into the night sky from the facility.

“Some of the drones were destroyed by air-defence forces. Several fell on the territory of the station. A fire broke out at the facility,” Vorobyov stated.

Three transformers at the power station caught fire, according to the emergencies ministry cited by Kommersant newspaper. The town of Shatura, with a population of about 33,000, experienced complete heating loss during the incident.

Emergency Response Measures

Authorities activated backup power systems and deployed mobile heating units to affected areas. Vorobyov assured residents that “all efforts are being taken to promptly restore heat supply” amid challenging winter conditions.

One local resident confirmed the heating disruption, highlighting the immediate impact on civilians in the region.

Escalating Energy Infrastructure Attacks

The strike marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s targeting strategy. While Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian power and heating infrastructure throughout the conflict, Ukraine had previously focused primarily on disrupting Russia’s oil refineries, crude terminals, and pipelines.

This represents one of the first major successful attacks on electricity and heat stations serving Moscow and its surrounding region, which houses over 22 million people.

Broader Drone Warfare Context

Russia’s defence ministry reported downing 75 Ukrainian drones on Sunday, including 36 over the Black Sea and several over the Moscow region. The coordinated drone attacks prompted temporary flight suspensions at Vnukovo airport before services resumed approximately an hour later.

Ukraine has not immediately commented on the Shatura strike, maintaining its typical operational silence regarding specific attacks inside Russian territory.

Historical Significance of Shatura Plant

The damaged Shatura power station holds historical importance as one of Russia’s oldest energy facilities. Founded under Vladimir Lenin following the Bolshevik revolution, the plant originally operated on peat before transitioning to primarily natural gas fuel sources.
