Adani Power Wins Assam’s 3.2 GW Coal Tender, Plans ₹2 Trillion Expansion

Key Takeaways

  • Adani Power wins Assam’s 3.2 GW coal power tender as lowest bidder
  • Plans massive ₹2 trillion expansion to reach 42 GW capacity by FY32
  • First 12 GW of new capacity on track for commissioning by FY30

Adani Power has secured a major victory as the lowest bidder for Assam’s 3.2 gigawatt coal power supply tender, marking a significant step in the company’s ambitious expansion plans. The bid has received regulatory approval from the state electricity commission, with formal award communication expected shortly.

Expanding Thermal Power Portfolio

This tender win comes as part of a broader pipeline exceeding 22 GW of thermal power bids across multiple Indian states. States including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal are actively seeking long-term baseload capacity to address rising electricity demand and intermittent renewable generation challenges.

The company previously announced approximately $5 billion in investments for two coal-powered plants in August. Adani Power’s strategic vision involves expanding its capacity from the current 18 GW to 42 GW by fiscal year 2032, with 8.5 GW already secured under long-term power purchase agreements.

Massive Investment and Preparedness

Adani Power will invest approximately ₹2 trillion in this planned expansion over the coming years. The first phase of 12 GW capacity remains on schedule for commissioning by fiscal year 2030, demonstrating the company’s commitment to timely execution.

In a display of advanced planning, the power firm has already pre-ordered all necessary boilers, turbines, and generators for the expansion. Deliveries are scheduled in staggered phases over the next 38-75 months, ensuring smooth project implementation.

Improved International Payments

In a separate development, Adani Power reported significant improvement in its power dues from Bangladesh. The outstanding amount has been reduced to just 15 days of supply, a substantial improvement from approximately $900 million in May and nearly $2 billion earlier this year.
