SpaceX Disables Starlink at Myanmar Scam Centers in Major Crackdown

SpaceX Cuts Off Starlink Services to Myanmar Scam Centers

SpaceX has disabled Starlink satellite services to over 2,500 devices operating within scam compounds along the Myanmar-Thailand border. This decisive action targets criminal syndicates that traffic people globally and force them to run fraudulent operations generating billions annually.

Key Developments

  • SpaceX disabled 2,500+ Starlink kits in suspected scam centers
  • Myanmar military seized KK Park compound and 30 Starlink devices
  • Joint international operations returning thousands of suspected scammers

Crackdown on Border Crime Operations

The service shutdown followed Myanmar military’s takeover of KK Park, one of the country’s largest compounds, as part of broader efforts to reclaim insurgent-controlled areas. Remote connectivity technology had facilitated Chinese crime syndicates operating along the border with impunity.

Lauren Dreyer, head of Starlink business operations, stated: “In Myanmar… SpaceX proactively identified and disabled over 2,500 Starlink Kits in the vicinity of suspected ‘scam centers’. We are committed to ensuring the service remains a force for good and sustains trust worldwide: both connecting the unconnected and detecting and preventing misuse by bad actors.”

Human Trafficking and Forced Labor

Over 30 scam compounds along the Thai-Myanmar border traffic people from around the world, luring them with fake job offers before forcing them into cyber fraud. These internet sweatshops scam foreigners through business and romance schemes, thriving in lawless border regions since pandemic-era casino closures.

According to experts, while some participants join willingly, many are compelled by organized crime groups. Authorities from Thailand, China, and Myanmar launched joint operations in February that have returned thousands of suspected scammers to their home countries.

State media The Global New Light of Myanmar confirmed the military “conducted operations in KK Park near the Myanmar-Thai border” and “seized 30 sets of Starlink receivers and accessories.”
