Zelenskyy Warns Russia Exploiting Global Distraction in Ukraine War

Key Takeaways

  • Zelenskyy warns Russia is exploiting global distraction to intensify attacks
  • Ukraine requests more air defenses and long-range missiles from allies
  • Fresh Russian strikes kill one, injure dozens across multiple regions
  • Kremlin threatens nuclear escalation over potential Tomahawk missile supplies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an urgent warning to allies on Sunday, stating that Russia is capitalizing on diverted global attention to escalate its bombardment of Ukraine. As diplomatic efforts stall, Moscow has intensified attacks on energy infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without power ahead of winter.

In separate calls with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelenskyy pressed for enhanced air defenses and long-range capabilities. “Russia is now taking advantage of the moment—the fact that the Middle East and domestic issues in every country are getting maximum attention,” he stated during discussions with Macron.

Defense Cooperation Intensifies

Zelenskyy’s second call with President Trump in two days focused on strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. “We agreed with President Trump that our teams, our military would handle everything we discussed,” the Ukrainian leader confirmed, though details remained undisclosed. The White House has yet to comment on the discussions.

Previous Trump-Putin talks in August failed to produce a peace agreement, leaving military cooperation as the primary focus.

Tomahawk Missile Request Sparks Nuclear Warning

Ukraine’s recent push for long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles has triggered stark warnings from Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that Russia would treat any such missile launches as potentially nuclear-armed.

“Just imagine, a long-range missile takes off and flies, and we know it could be nuclear-armed. What is the Russian Federation to think?” Peskov told state television, framing the potential supply as a major escalation risk.

Fresh Attacks Across Ukraine

Russia launched new strikes early Sunday, resulting in one death and over a dozen injuries across four regions. Zelenskyy described Moscow’s tactics as becoming “even more vile” during his conversation with Macron.

The conflict, which Russia terms a “special military operation” to counter NATO expansion, has displaced millions since February 2022. Ukraine and European allies condemn it as an illegal land grab that has caused tens of thousands of casualties and widespread destruction. Russia currently occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, with much of it devastated by fighting.
