Delhi reports a sharp spike in cholera cases linked to contaminated water

Delhi has reported a worrying surge in cholera cases this year, with hospitals recording dozens of patients showing classic symptoms: severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and vomiting. Health officials say contaminated water and poor hygiene are the main causes behind the spike.

According to official data, over 240 cases of cholera have been detected across 104 Delhi wards, marking a sharp rise compared to previous years. Areas with poor drainage and irregular water supply have been hit the hardest.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its water testing and sanitation drives, collecting thousands of samples for contamination checks. Health workers have also been deployed to raise awareness about boiling water before drinking and maintaining proper hand hygiene.

“Cholera spreads quickly through unsafe water and unclean food,” said a senior health official. “Immediate rehydration and medical treatment are crucial because the disease can turn fatal within hours if left untreated.”

Experts warn that monsoon stagnation and the overflowing of drains may have worsened the situation. Doctors at leading hospitals have urged residents to seek medical help if they experience watery diarrhoea or weakness.

The city has also seen a rise in malaria and dengue cases, prompting authorities to intensify fumigation and mosquito-control efforts.

HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE URGED CITIZENS TO:

  • Drink boiled or filtered water only.
  • Avoid eating street food during this time.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Cover stored water containers properly.

While no large-scale outbreak has been declared yet, experts stress that preventive measures are critical to stop further spread.
