Energy, ports and materials define Adani Group’s strategy: Karan Adani

The Adani Group may appear to be involved in many different sectors, but its businesses are actually built around a few core areas. The focus is on energy, logistics and materials that support the future economy.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, said the group’s strategy is driven by long-term objectives rather than just capacity numbers or short-term outcomes.

“If someone is trying to understand the Adani Group, it might look confusing from the outside, as if we are doing everything,” he said. “But honestly, if you look closely, the group operates across three major verticals.”

STRONG FOCUS ON ENERGY

According to Karan Adani, the first major vertical for the group is energy. The goal is to generate affordable power while supporting India’s long-term energy priorities.

“As a group, we believe we have to create energy that is cheapest for the consumer and also aligned with what the government is looking at from a long-term perspective,” he said.

He explained that the group has built a fully integrated energy business. This includes generation, transmission and distribution of power. The generation portfolio itself is expanding across several segments.

“In generation we have thermal power, we started renewable energy, and now we are moving into battery storage,” Adani said.

He added that the company is also entering the data centre space as part of its energy and digital infrastructure strategy.

BUILDING INTEGRATED LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT

The second major vertical for the group is ports, logistics and transportation infrastructure.

Karan Adani said the company’s aim is to connect different infrastructure assets and create an integrated network that can reduce logistics costs for the country. “The whole ports, logistics network, airports and transport utilities are part of this vertical,” he said. “We try to integrate these assets with the objective of reducing logistics costs for India.”

Adani Ports, India’s largest private port operator, plays a central role in this network by linking maritime infrastructure with inland logistics systems.

MATERIALS FOR FUTURE INDUSTRIES

The third vertical for the group is materials and industrial resources. Karan Adani said this segment has become increasingly important due to two major global trends. “In the last five years, two big trends have emerged globally – the transition to renewable energy and the rapid digitisation of the economy,” he said.

According to him, these transitions require specific raw materials and industrial capabilities. “We looked at which materials are required for these two transitions,” he explained.

This is where businesses such as cement, aluminium and copper fit into the group’s broader strategy. Defence manufacturing is also linked to this materials ecosystem.

A STRATEGY SHAPED BY LONG-TERM TRENDS

Karan Adani emphasised that the group’s business expansion is not random but guided by long-term economic changes. Energy transition, digital infrastructure and industrial materials are areas expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

“That’s how you should look at the group,” he said.
