Elijah Wood hints at his return as Frodo Baggins in The Hunt for Gollum

Actor Elijah Wood has recently said that he doesn’t see anyone but himself playing Frodo Baggins, a popular character from The Lord of the Rings films and book series . Amid anticipation around the The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, new addition to the popular fantasy franchise, Wood hinted at reprising his iconic character.

The actor, in an interview with The Sunday Times, expressed his views about portraying Frodo Baggins in the original trilogy. He said, “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able.”

The 45-year-old refused to officially say anything, however, he maintained that he was “thrilled with the prospect of another film.”

The actor’s comments follow persistent speculations about who will lead the cast in the upcoming film. Some unverified reports have even hinted that actor Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) might step into the role of Aragorn, replacing Viggo Mortensen in the latest chapter. However, as of now, no official confirmation has been provided regarding any changes to the cast.

Wood also suggested that talks regarding his potential return to the franchise have been happening for a while. He said, “It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is being directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise the title character, Gollum. Serkis had played the character since The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The Hunt for Gollum brings back the core creative trio of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. While the film was originally slated for a 2026 debut, the release date for the movie has now been pushed to December 17, 2027.
