UK Launches Major AI Skills Drive to Capture £193bn Economic Boost
The UK government has unveiled a major push to train the national workforce in artificial intelligence, targeting a potential £193 billion ($244 billion) economic opportunity by 2035.
Key Takeaways
- 2,000 scholarships for AI courses, focused on disadvantaged individuals.
- New free online course, “AI Essentials”, to teach workplace AI basics.
- Part of a broader strategy to establish the UK as a global AI leader.
- Industry leaders have welcomed the move as crucial for future-proofing jobs.
Free Training and Targeted Scholarships
Announced on Thursday, the initiative has two core components. First, a new free online resource called “AI Essentials” will be hosted on the government’s Skills for Life website. It will cover fundamental topics like how AI works, its workplace applications, and online safety.
Second, the government will fund 2,000 scholarships for more advanced AI courses at leading universities and training providers. These are specifically aimed at people from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from low-income families or who are unemployed.
Government and Industry Backing
“AI is moving fast, but we are making sure workers and businesses can seize the opportunities it has to offer,” said UK Technology Minister Michelle Donelan.
The move was praised by industry. Julian David, CEO of techUK, said, “This is a welcome step from the government to help workers develop the skills they need to thrive in the age of AI.”
Part of a Broader AI Investment Push
This skills drive is part of the UK’s sustained investment in AI. In 2023, the government committed £1 billion to AI research and development. It has also established a new AI Safety Institute to ensure the technology’s safe development and use.
The overarching goal is to position the UK at the forefront of the global AI sector and secure the massive economic growth it promises.
