U.S. Sanctions Indian Firms, Nationals in Iran Oil Trade Crackdown

U.S. Sanctions Indian Firms, Nationals in Iran Oil Crackdown

The United States has imposed sanctions on multiple Indian companies and individuals for their involvement in Iran’s petroleum trade, alleging the funds support terrorist proxies and weapons systems that threaten U.S. forces and allies.

Key Sanctions Announced

The U.S. Departments of State and Treasury targeted shipping networks and an airline involved in illicit Iranian oil sales. Key designations include:

  • Indian nationals Zair Husain Iqbal Husain Sayed and Zulfikar Hussain Rizvi Sayed
  • Maharashtra-based RN Ship Management Private Limited
  • Pune-based TR6 Petro India LLP

Scope of the Designations

The State Department designated 17 entities, individuals, and vessels across several countries including India, Panama, and the Seychelles. Concurrently, the Treasury Department designated 41 entities, individuals, vessels, and aircraft.

The action intensifies efforts against Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical exports, aiming to disrupt financial streams supporting Iran’s “malign activities.”

TR6 Petro’s Iranian Bitumen Imports

TR6 Petro, an India-based petroleum trader, imported over $8 million worth of Iranian-origin bitumen between October 2024 and June 2025 from multiple companies. The State Department designated the firm for knowingly engaging in significant transactions for Iranian petroleum products.

U.S. Rationale and Regional Impact

The State Department stated that funds from this oil trade support Iran’s regional terrorist proxies and weapons procurement. “The Iranian regime continues to fuel conflict in the Middle East to fund its destabilising activities,” officials said.

This behavior enables Iran to fund nuclear escalations, support terrorist groups, and disrupt crucial waterways for global trade.

Continued Enforcement Commitment

The U.S. will continue acting against maritime service providers, dark fleet operators, and petroleum traders involved in Iranian crude transport. The actions support National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM-2), directing maximum pressure on Iran.

“The United States remains committed to disrupting the illicit funding streams that finance all aspects of Iran’s malign activities. As long as Iran devotes revenue to funding attacks against the United States and our allies, supporting terrorism around the world, and pursuing other destabilising actions, we will use all the tools at our disposal to hold the regime accountable,” the State Department said.

The sanctions were implemented under counterterrorism provisions targeting Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sector.
