Russia Tests Nuclear-Powered Burevestnik Missile With Unlimited Range

Russia has successfully tested a nuclear-powered cruise missile with unlimited range that can evade all existing US missile defense systems, President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday.

Key Takeaways

  • Russia’s Burevestnik missile flew 14,000 km in a recent test
  • Nuclear propulsion gives it virtually unlimited range and flight time
  • The weapon can evade all current US missile defense systems
  • Western experts express skepticism about radiation risks

What Makes Burevestnik Different

The Burevestnik (NATO name SSC-X-9 Skyfall) represents a new class of weaponry. Unlike conventional missiles, it carries a miniature nuclear reactor that provides continuous power during flight. This enables virtually unlimited range and the ability to stay airborne for days while circling the globe.

President Putin first revealed this project in March 2018, claiming the missile could render all existing defense systems useless. The recent test confirms Russia has advanced the technology significantly over six years.

Record-Breaking Test Performance

Russia’s Chief of General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, disclosed that the October 21 test saw the missile travel approximately 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) over 15 hours. This endurance allows the weapon to reach any global target while changing course multiple times.

Challenges to US Defense Systems

American missile defense systems including THAAD, Patriot, and Aegis face fundamental limitations against the Burevestnik. These systems are designed to intercept missiles following predictable trajectories with limited fuel.

The nuclear-powered missile flies at extremely low altitudes to avoid radar detection. Its continuous power enables unpredictable maneuvers including zigzag patterns, climbs, dives, and extended loitering outside airspace boundaries.

International Concerns and Verification

Western defense analysts have questioned the veracity of Russia’s claims, noting the absence of publicly released evidence. Environmental experts have raised concerns about potential radiation hazards during flight operations.

Regardless of verification status, the Burevestnik represents a weapons technology currently unmatched by the United States and potentially capable of altering strategic military balances.
