Strengthening Diaspora Connections
During his November 21, 2025 visit, PM Modi held extensive discussions with Indian-origin tech professionals working in FinTech, social media, agriculture, education, healthcare, and medical devices. He emphasized deepening their engagement with India and collaborating closely with local communities.
“Called upon them to deepen their engagement with India and work closely with our people,” the Prime Minister stated in a social media post describing the interaction as “fruitful.”
Community Engagement and Cultural Promotion
Modi also met Indian community members actively involved with various organizations in South Africa. He encouraged them to maintain momentum in enhancing people-to-people linkages and boost the popularity of Indian cultural practices like Yoga and Ayurveda among South Africans.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the Prime Minister “emphasised their role as ‘a living bridge’ between the two countries” and appreciated the contributions of South Africa’s 1.7 million-strong Indian diaspora in nurturing historical friendship bonds.
The Prime Minister also received a ‘Kalash’ from Chinmaya Mission containing Shree Anna (millets) from both India and South Africa, which will be placed in Durban’s Annapoorna Devi Temple.
Naspers Investment Discussions
In a significant business meeting, PM Modi held talks with Naspers Chairman Koos Bekker and CEO Fabricio Bloisi about expanding investments in India’s digital ecosystem. Discussions focused on artificial intelligence, startup ecosystem, space sector, and exploring new avenues in consumer markets and technology.
“Naspers’ success in India reflects ease of doing business and the strength of the Startup ecosystem in India,” Jaiswal stated. Modi described the discussions as focusing on “deepening investment linkages” and commended Naspers for working with Indian youth across diverse sectors.
Bilateral Meetings and Summit Context
Separately, Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to review progress in cooperation areas including defence and security, critical minerals, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties.
The Johannesburg summit marks the first G20 Summit held in Africa, with the African Union having gained membership during India’s presidency in 2023. Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Gauteng upon arrival.
