‘Part of his brain missing’: Lawyer of Venezuelan migrant held for killing Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman in Chicago

A 25-year-old Venezuelan migrant, Jose Medina, has been ordered to remain in custody for allegedly shooting dead an 18-year-old Loyola University freshman in Chicago.

The victim, Sheridan Gorman, was killed on March 19 near Tobey Prinz Beach in the Rogers Park neighbourhood. According to prosecutors, Gorman and her friends had walked onto a pier when Medina, who was hiding behind a lighthouse, suddenly emerged armed with a gun.

As the group fled, Medina allegedly fired a single shot, striking Gorman in the back. She collapsed near the lighthouse and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Attack linked to prior movements, evidence

Investigators said surveillance footage, witness accounts and forensic evidence helped identify Medina, who was later arrested at an apartment building where he lived with his mother.

Police also recovered the suspected weapon wrapped in a black ski mask. During questioning, Medina admitted to owning a firearm but denied being present at the time of the shooting, according to prosecutors.

He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Court hearing, health concerns and custody

Medina appeared in court via video link, wearing a mask, and is currently being held at Cermak Health Services in Cook County Jail after testing positive for tuberculosis.

Both prosecutors and defence attorneys requested that he remain in custody until trial, with the court agreeing and scheduling his next hearing for April.

Gorman’s family described her as “the heart of our family” and said her death has left them devastated.

The case has also sparked political debate, with US leaders weighing in on immigration policies. Authorities, however, emphasised that the focus remains on ensuring justice in what they described as a “senseless act of violence.”

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
