Pakistan’s military announced on Tuesday that at least 92 militants were killed and 15 security personnel lost their lives during a series of intense attacks and counter-operations in the volatile Balochistan province.
Intelligence-Based Operations in Mach and Kolpur
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, security forces conducted targeted, intelligence-based operations in the Mach and Kolpur regions. These initial operations resulted in the deaths of 24 militants. Four security force members, including two officers, were killed during this phase.
Mach Jail Attack and Heavy Exchange of Fire
In a separate and significant incident, militants launched a direct attack on the Mach Jail. The ISPR stated that security forces responded decisively. The ensuing heavy firefight led to the killing of at least 68 more militants. This clash also claimed the lives of 11 security personnel, which included four members of law enforcement agencies.
The military has since declared the clearance operation complete.
Allegations of Cross-Border Support
The ISPR further claimed, based on intelligence agency reports, that the militants involved in these attacks were supported by facilitators operating from across the border. This statement aligns with Pakistan’s long-standing allegation that Baloch nationalist insurgents receive assistance from India—a charge consistently denied by New Delhi.
Background of the Balochistan Insurgency
Balochistan, a province bordering Afghanistan and Iran, has witnessed a low-level insurgency for over two decades. The conflict began with Baloch nationalist groups demanding a greater share of the province’s resources. Over time, the movement evolved into an armed insurgency seeking independence from Pakistan.
The recent violence marks one of the deadliest single-day tolls in the restive region, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by Pakistan.
