A loud explosion was reported near the US embassy in western Oslo early Sunday, prompting a significant police response, news agency Reuters reported citing authorities. The Oslo police department stated it was unclear what caused the blast, which occurred around 1 am local time, or who might be involved.
“The police are in a dialogue with the embassy and there are no reports of any injured persons,” a statement said.
Eyewitnesses told Norwegian daily Verdens Gang that smoke was visible rising from the area surrounding the embassy compound.
The embassy had not immediately responded to requests for comment outside of regular business hours, leaving questions about the cause and impact of the incident.
Further details are awaited.
