India Launches Major Relief Operation for Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka
The Indian Armed Forces have launched comprehensive rescue and relief operations in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, deploying helicopters, warships, and transport aircraft to assist flood-affected communities.
Key Relief Efforts Underway
Indian helicopters have joined search and rescue missions in flood-hit regions, evacuating people stranded by rising waters as large parts of the island nation face severe flooding. Rescue teams are using aerial support to reach marooned residents in areas where road access has become impossible.
People are praising the “incredible work” of pilots and ground teams involved in the operation.
Naval and Air Force Deployments
- Warships INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri delivered 4.5 tonnes of dry rations, 2 tonnes of fresh rations, and essential items
- A C-130J aircraft landed in Colombo with nearly 12 tonnes of relief supplies including tents, tarpaulins, blankets, and hygiene kits
- An IL-76 transport aircraft brought nine tonnes of relief cargo with 80 NDRF personnel and specialized equipment
- Two Chetak helicopters from INS Vikrant are conducting joint operations with Sri Lanka Air Force
Humanitarian Impact
The disaster has affected over 200,000 people from 61,000 families, with thousands displaced to temporary relief camps after their homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Sri Lanka authorities have described the situation in Western Province as an “unprecedented disaster.”
India announced the same day, pledging swift assistance as both countries coordinate closely in affected districts.
