How Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Was Assassinated in Libya

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Assassinated in Coordinated Attack

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was assassinated in a meticulously planned operation by four masked gunmen who disabled security cameras before the attack, according to a report.

Key Details

  • Victim: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, 51, son of Muammar Gaddafi.
  • Date & Location: July 10, at his home in Zliten, 100 miles east of Tripoli.
  • Method: Gunmen cut electricity to deactivate security cameras before the shooting.
  • Status: No group has claimed responsibility; motive remains unclear.

The Assassination

Saif al-Islam was reportedly shot dead at his residence. The assailants, described as “four masked gunmen,” first cut off the power to his house to disable security systems. His body was discovered the next morning by his security guards.

Background and Political Journey

Once seen as the likely successor to his father, Saif al-Islam’s life was upended by the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi. He was captured by fighters in Zintan and held for several years.

After being granted amnesty and released in 2017, he re-entered the political arena. He announced his candidacy for the 2021 Libyan presidential elections, which were postponed indefinitely. At the time of his death, he was reportedly preparing to run again in elections tentatively scheduled for next year.

Implications for Libya

The assassination has heightened fears of renewed instability in Libya. The country has been mired in conflict and divided between rival governments since the fall of the Gaddafi regime over a decade ago. This killing threatens to deepen existing political fractures.
