Deeply disappointing: Trump attacks Supreme Court, says it was swayed by foreign interests

US President Donald Trump on Friday lashed out at the Supreme Court of the United States after it struck down his global tariff regime, calling the decision “deeply disappointing” and accusing some justices of being influenced by foreign interests.

Reacting publicly to the court’s 6-3 ruling, Trump said he was “ashamed of certain members of the Court” for blocking his use of emergency powers to impose sweeping import duties.

He claimed the judgment would embolden America’s trading partners.

“Foreign countries are so happy,” Trump said, suggesting that governments targeted by his tariffs were celebrating the decision.

But he warned that the reprieve would not last. “Countries won’t be dancing for long,” he added.

Trump also made clear he is not retreating from his trade agenda. “There are methods that are even stronger available to me,” he said, without detailing specific steps.

He later signaled that alternative tools were already under consideration. “Other alternatives will be used on tariffs,” Trump said, adding, “Could be we take in more money.”

In a series of sweeping assertions about executive authority, Trump said, “I am allowed to cut off all trade with a country. I am allowed to impose an embargo.”

“I could do anything I want to do but I can’t charge any money,” he said, appearing to argue that the court’s ruling limits tariff collection but not other forms of trade restriction.

“I will go in a stronger direction now,” he said.

The Supreme Court ruled earlier that Trump could not rely on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs without congressional approval, holding that the statute does not authorise taxation through import duties and reaffirming Congress’s constitutional authority over trade and revenue.
