Hindu Man Burned Alive in Bangladesh, Second Such Attack This Month

Key Takeaways

  • A 35-year-old Hindu man, Bikash Poddar, was set on fire and killed in Bangladesh’s Bagerhat district.
  • This is the second such attack in the same district this month, following the killing of a Hindu priest.
  • Police have arrested two suspects, while the minority community demands justice and safety.

In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old Hindu man was burned alive by a mob in Bangladesh’s Bagerhat district. The victim, Bikash Poddar, succumbed to his injuries in a Khulna hospital on Saturday.

According to a PTI report, a group of assailants poured kerosene on Poddar and set him ablaze on Friday. Police have since arrested two suspects in connection with the case, though the motive remains unclear.

A Disturbing Pattern of Violence

This attack is part of a worrying series of assaults targeting Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. Earlier this month, a Hindu priest, Ananta Gopal Ganguly, was killed in a similar manner in the same district.

The back-to-back killings have ignited outrage within the community, which constitutes about 10% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population. Community leaders have demanded swift justice for the victims.

Government Response and Accusations

The Bangladeshi government has condemned the attacks and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, it faces accusations of not doing enough to protect minority communities, especially during religious festivals when tensions often flare.

Authorities have denied these allegations, stating they are taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of all citizens. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in safeguarding religious minorities in the region.
