US Treasury Cuts Ties with Booz Allen Hamilton After Major Tax Data Leak
The US Treasury Department has terminated all contracts with consulting giant Booz Allen Hamilton following a significant leak of confidential tax return information, including that of former President Donald Trump.
Key Details of the Breach and Fallout
The termination, announced on Friday, specifically ends Booz Allen’s work on the IRS Tax Professional Account program. This action stems directly from a data security incident earlier this year.
In May, the IRS revealed that a government contractor had pleaded guilty to leaking tax return data to news organizations. The contractor, Charles Littlejohn, was sentenced to five years in prison in January for unauthorized disclosure.
Prosecutors stated Littlejohn worked for the contractor from 2017 to 2021.
Treasury’s Response and Security Review
The Treasury Department confirmed it conducted a thorough review of its contractors’ data security practices. It has since implemented stronger policies and procedures to prevent future breaches.
“The Treasury Department is committed to protecting the confidentiality of taxpayer information and will continue to take all necessary steps to safeguard this information,” the department said.
Booz Allen Hamilton’s Reaction
In a statement, Booz Allen Hamilton expressed disappointment at the Treasury’s decision. The firm emphasized its full cooperation with the government’s investigation.
“We have a long history of providing high-quality services to the Treasury Department and other government agencies, and we are confident that we have the experience and expertise to continue to do so,” the company said.
