40 years after disappearance, Israel raids Lebanon graveyard for missing pilot

In a dramatic overnight operation deep inside eastern Lebanon, a village graveyard was searched by Israeli special forces in an attempt to recover the remains of a pilot who disappeared nearly four decades ago.

The mission, confirmed by Israel on Friday night, was aimed at recovering the body of missing Israeli Air Force navigator Ron Arad, whose aircraft was brought down during fighting in 1986.

No casualties among Israeli soldiers were reported during the operation, Israeli officials said, though no evidence of Arad’s remains was ultimately located. It was also indicated that the search would continue.

BEQAA VALLEY GRAVEYARD SEARCHED

According to ground reporting from the village of Nabishit in the Beqaa Valley, Israeli commandos were brought into the area late at night in four helicopters. Witnesses said the soldiers were lowered to the ground using ropes before a local graveyard was entered and digging was carried out at what was believed to be a possible burial site linked to Arad.

Freshly disturbed earth was visible at one of the graves, suggesting that the site had been briefly excavated before the forces withdrew.

A MYSTERY THAT BEGAN IN 1986

The operation is linked to one of Israel’s longest-running military mysteries. In 1986, during hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, an Israeli aircraft was shot down over Lebanon. Its navigator, Ron Arad, disappeared following the incident.

It is widely believed in the region that he died shortly after the crash somewhere in the Beqaa Valley and was buried locally, though the exact location has never been confirmed.

“People believe that he was buried here when he died,” the reporter said from the graveyard. “But after 40 years, Israel is still searching for that Israeli pilot’s body.”

SEARCH FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES

The raid was confirmed by Israeli authorities to have been part of an ongoing effort to trace Arad’s fate. The mission was described by officials as an attempt to investigate intelligence suggesting his remains might be buried in the Nabishit area.

Despite digging at the suspected site, no evidence linked to Arad was found.

Local reports said resistance was encountered from the Lebanese army as well as fighters from Hezbollah during the operation, after which the forces withdrew from the area.

DECADES-LONG PURSUIT

The search for Ron Arad has stretched across decades and numerous intelligence operations. Israeli agencies, including the country’s intelligence service Mossad, have pursued leads across Lebanon and the wider region.

According to local accounts, people linked to Hezbollah had previously been detained by Israeli operatives in attempts to uncover information about Arad’s fate.

Even as the current conflict in Lebanon intensifies, Israeli officials say the mission to recover the missing pilot has not been abandoned.

“Israel is still searching for that Israeli pilot’s body,” the ground report said. “After 40 years, they are still looking for the grave of that dead pilot in Lebanon.”
