Air India chief executive Campbell Wilson has resigned, but will continue in his role until a successor is appointed, news outlet Mint reported citing multiple sources. The move comes at a critical time for the airline, which is dealing with operational pressures, rising costs and the prospect of a significant financial loss this year.
Wilson’s resignation was accepted during a board meeting last week, the report claimed, with the transition expected to continue over the coming months. As per the report, he will remain in place to ensure continuity until the board finds his successor, likely extending his stay into September if needed.
The leadership change had been in motion for some time. The search for a successor reportedly began earlier this year after Wilson indicated he did not wish to continue beyond his contract period. He had taken charge in September 2022, shortly after the airline returned to the Tata Group following privatisation. According to the report, discussions with the potential candidates are at an advanced stage, with a key meeting expected in the coming days.
CHALLENGES MOUNT FOR AIRLINE
The change at the top comes as Air India faces multiple headwinds. Ongoing tensions in West Asia have led to airspace restrictions, forcing the airline to reroute flights and add fuel stops, significantly increasing operating costs, particularly on long-haul international routes. At the same time, delays in aircraft deliveries have constrained capacity expansion plans, adding to the pressure on operations.
The airline is also still dealing with the aftermath of last year’s fatal crash involving a Boeing Dreamliner operating as Flight AI 171. The aircraft went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, resulting in 241 deaths, including passengers and people on the ground.
The incident continues to weigh on the airline’s operational environment and public perception, even as it pushes ahead with restructuring and expansion plans.
Air India has not issued an official statement on Wilson’s resignation so far.
