WhatsApp working on Guest Chats so you can message people without the app

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature called Guest Chats, which would allow users to message people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The feature is said to work through a secure chat link, making it easier to connect and communicate with non-WhatsApp users directly through the browser.

According to a WABetaInfo report, Guest Chats may not require users to download any separate application. Instead, non-WhatsApp users are given a seamless introduction to the platform, which may encourage them to sign up for WhatsApp later.

How the Guest Chat works

A WhatsApp user can generate a link through the “Invite a Friend” section and share it via SMS, email, or any other messaging platform. Once the recipient opens the link on a mobile or desktop browser, they are presented with two options: download WhatsApp or continue as a guest. Before the conversation begins, the guest is required to enter a name, which can be a pseudonym, but one that helps the other participant identify them.

According to the report, the guest chat is secured by end-to-end encryption, meaning WhatsApp cannot access the contents of the conversation.

Choosing to continue as a guest requires the user to accept WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. Afterwards, the guest will be able to see the phone number of the person who initiated the chat invitation.

It is worth noting that guest accounts are not verified by WhatsApp. While the feature is convenient, it does come with a security caveat. Since WhatsApp cannot verify the identity of the person opening the link, there is a risk that an unintended recipient could gain access to the chat — whether through a compromised email account or a changed phone number. However, during the conversation, the word “Guest” will be displayed in the top bar of the app, making it easy for WhatsApp users to identify that they are communicating with someone who does not have a registered WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp’s Guest Chat limitations

Since Guest Chats are designed for temporary access, the feature comes with a few limitations. Guest users will not have access to group chats or media sharing options, including stickers and voice messages. Even commonly used features such as sharing photos, videos, documents, and GIFs will reportedly be unavailable. Voice and video calls are also off the table. In short, guests will only be able to send and receive text-based messages.
