WhatsApp introduced multiple updates on March 26, including AI-generated replies for personal conversations under the “AI Writing Help” feature. The update also brings additions like one-tap storage management and sticker suggestions, among others. The AI-powered writing assistant was first rolled out in August last year, allowing users to rephrase or adjust the tone of their messages in private chats. With the latest update, WhatsApp says the feature can now suggest replies based on previous conversations, aiming to help users get their messages “just right.”
Notably, the feature was previously limited to select regions, including the United States. However, in its latest blog post, WhatsApp has confirmed that it will be available for everyone soon. The privacy of personal chats remains intact even when users use the Writing Help feature, says WhatsApp.
With this move, the messaging platform appears to be encouraging users to rely on its built-in AI tools for composing messages, rather than turning to rival services like ChatGPT or Claude. However, the choice ultimately rests with users to decide which platform they trust to draft or refine their messages.
To use the feature, users need to open a chat, tap on the text input field, then on the stickers section, and then select the AI icon marked by a pencil with sparkles.
It is common to use AI for emails and other forms of writing. However, when it comes to casual conversations, such as family group chats, people may prefer more natural and human-like interactions. Having said that, WhatsApp’s AI Writing Help feature could be useful for drafting more polished or professional messages, especially in work-related conversations, such as replying to a boss.
WhatsApp has also introduced a one-tap storage management feature to help users declutter their devices without losing important conversations. The new Manage Storage option, accessible by tapping the chat name, allows users to identify and delete large media files directly within any chat, without having to delete the entire conversation. Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out a sticker suggestion feature that recommends relevant stickers when a user types an emoji, making it easier to express emotions during a conversation.
