Steam parent Valve responds to New York’s ‘mystery boxes’ gambling lawsuit: ‘We don’t believe…’

Valve Corporation has responded to a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General (NYAG) Letitia James. The lawsuit concerns the parent company of PC gaming store Steam over the use of loot boxes in games distributed on the platform. The company said it disagrees with claims that the in-game “mystery boxes” amount to gambling.

In a statement published on its website, Valve said it does not believe the feature violates gambling laws and expressed disappointment with the allegations. the company wrote.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this year by the New York Attorney General’s office, alleges that loot boxes in games such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 promote illegal gambling and may encourage addictive behaviour among younger players.
