OnePlus likely shutting down operations in several markets, India chief Robin Liu quits

OnePlus India has confirmed that its CEO, Robin Liu, will step down from his role effective March 31. The announcement comes just a month after the company dismissed rumours suggesting that it was winding down operations in some markets. Liu’s departure has now added to speculation about the company’s broader global strategy.

The company confirmed Liu’s exit in an official statement. Commenting on his future plans, OnePlus said he will now pursue personal interests. At the same time, the company clarified that its India operations will continue under the existing strategy, indicating that there are no immediate changes expected in the local business.

“We thank Robin for his contributions to OnePlus India. He moves on to pursue his personal passions, and we wish him the very best for his future endeavours. OnePlus India operations continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured,” OnePlus told India Today Tech.

Earlier reports about shutdown were denied

Earlier, Liu had rejected reports suggesting that the company was shutting down operations in several regions. He had described such claims as misinformation and reassured stakeholders that the company’s operations would continue. However, his sudden exit has once again sparked conversations around those earlier reports.

Speculation around a possible shutdown began after a report by Android Headlines suggested that OnePlus was quietly reducing its presence in certain regions.

The report claimed that shipments declined in 2024, some products were cancelled, and teams in the US and Europe were scaled down. It also suggested that more key decisions were being handled from China, which could have resulted in fewer launches in Western markets.

The timing of Liu’s departure has added to the ongoing discussions. He is currently serving his notice period and is expected to move back to China. Earlier reports had also indicated that the company attempted to retain him.

What this means for OnePlus users in India

For now, there is no clear reason for users in India to be concerned. OnePlus has already denied rumours about shutting down operations, and the company has again reiterated that its India strategy will continue.

It remains unclear whether upcoming devices like the OnePlus 16 and OnePlus 16R will launch in India. However, the company appears to be continuing its focus on the mid-range segment.

The OnePlus Nord 6 has already been widely discussed and is expected to launch soon, suggesting that OnePlus remains active in the market.
