New Aadhaar App: UIDAI Explains Offline Verification Benefits

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar app, promoting its offline verification feature as a more secure and private method for identity confirmation.

Key Takeaways

  • New Aadhaar app enables secure, offline identity verification.
  • Users can share full or masked Aadhaar details, enhancing privacy.
  • Aims to reduce fraud by minimizing reliance on physical documents and photocopies.
  • Available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Secure Digital Storage and Offline Verification

The new application allows residents to store their Aadhaar card securely on their smartphones. A key feature is the ability to share either complete details or a masked version showing only essential information. This gives users full control over their privacy during identity checks.

This makes the app highly suitable for everyday scenarios requiring Aadhaar, such as hotel check-ins, gated society entry, and event access.

Official Endorsement of Enhanced Security

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar stated that offline verification through the app provides a “secure, convenient and privacy-protecting method” for confirming identity. He emphasized that this digital solution reduces the circulation of physical Aadhaar cards and photocopies, which are frequently misused for fraud.

Combating Aadhaar-Related Fraud

UIDAI officials highlighted that a major benefit of offline verification is minimizing the risk of misuse from shared physical documents. Since the app permits sharing only selected information, the potential for data misuse is significantly lowered. An added advantage is that no internet connection is required for the verification process itself.

How It Differs from mAadhaar

The UIDAI has clarified that the new Aadhaar app is not a replacement for the existing mAadhaar application. While mAadhaar is used for downloading an e-Aadhaar or ordering a PVC card, the new app functions as a secure, feature-rich digital wallet specifically for storing and sharing Aadhaar details with enhanced privacy measures.
