Neuralink patient shares 100-day journey, says he controls Mac and plays Warcraft by mind alone

British army veteran Jon L. Noble has successfully completed 100 days with Neuralink N1 marking a significant milestone in the integration of brain-computer interface technology into daily life. In an inspiring post on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, Noble who is among a select few – patient number 18 to be more specific – to have received the implant said the treatment has given him a new way to live so much so that he can’t imagine life without it now. He is paralysed below the neck following a C4 spinal injury.

In the post, he has gone on to narrate how life has changed ever since he got the N1 implant, from surgery to experiencing new ways to communicate with the physical world with his mind alone. According to Noble, the surgery involved a general anaesthetic and a small incision, after which a robotic system precisely placed 1,024 ultra-thin threads into his motor cortex. He was discharged the following day. Within three days, improvement was noticeable, and by the seventh day, the surgical scar had begun to fade. The recovery process was fast, he said.

Two weeks after the surgery, the implant was paired with a MacBook. This was the first time he had ever used a Mac. Following calibration sessions guided by Neuralink engineers, he was able to control the cursor of the computer using thought alone. By the third week, tasks such as scrolling, clicking, and typing became intuitive, he added. The technology integration was so smooth, Noble transitioned from novice to a “power user”, faster than he had expected. Using the Mac became second nature, he said.

On the 80th day, Noble was ready for the “big leagues”, at which point he could play World of Warcraft entirely through thought control. Initially, it was challenging, he admitted, but with practice, the brain and the interface synchronised effectively, allowing for hands-free gameplay at full speed.

Noble said people, particularly on social media, had been supportive, not sceptical about how his life had changed. He has been getting messages from individuals with disabilities, gamers, students, and scientists, all expressing interest and posing questions about the technology’s implications. The engagement underscores the broader interest in brain-computer interfaces, a field still nascent but showing tremendous potential.

After 100 days, Noble said that life without the Neuralink N1 implant was difficult to imagine. The device not only introduced a new way to operate a computer but also offered a novel approach to daily living.

The experience demonstrates the potential of brain-computer interfaces to transform human interaction with technology. Continued progress and user adaptation will be key to expanding their applications in various fields.

As technology advances, the coming months will be critical in assessing long-term benefits and challenges. Noble’s first 100 days with the Neuralink N1 implant provide valuable insights into the future of mind-controlled devices. Neuralink is owned by Elon Musk.
