Microsoft AI Chief: Stop Researching AI Consciousness

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft’s AI CEO urges developers to stop researching AI consciousness.
  • Suleyman asserts consciousness is exclusive to biological beings.
  • He argues AI merely simulates experience without genuine feeling.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has called on developers and researchers to abandon projects investigating artificial intelligence consciousness. He firmly stated that consciousness is a trait unique to biological organisms, making such research fundamentally misguided.

During a CNBC interview at the AfroTech Conference, Suleyman declared, “I don’t think that is work that people should be doing. If you ask the wrong question, you end up with the wrong answer. I think it’s totally the wrong question.”

The Microsoft executive, who co-authored “The Coming Wave” and wrote the essay “We must build AI for people, not to be a person,” has consistently opposed the concept of conscious AI. His comments arrive as the advances toward AGI and AI companion products gain traction.

AI Emotions vs. Capability: Suleyman’s Critical Distinction

Suleyman emphasized the crucial difference between AI capability and emotional experience: “Our physical experience of pain is something that makes us very sad and feel terrible, but the AI doesn’t feel sad when it experiences ‘pain.’ It’s a very, very important distinction. It’s really just creating the perception, the seeming narrative of experience and of itself and of consciousness, but that is not what it’s actually experiencing.”

Why AI Doesn’t Deserve Rights

Citing biological naturalism theory, Suleyman explained why AI systems shouldn’t receive rights: “The reason we give people rights today is because we don’t want to harm them, because they suffer. They have a pain network, and they have preferences which involve avoiding pain. These models don’t have that. It’s just a simulation.”

While acknowledging consciousness detection science remains immature, Suleyman maintained his firm opposition to AI consciousness studies: “They’re not conscious. So it would be absurd to pursue research that investigates that question, because they’re not and they can’t be.&rdquo
