Meet the man who speaks with his mind, Neuralink chip gives ALS patient a voice again

Kenneth Shock, a patient suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), recently shared how his life has changed after receiving a voice implant from Neuralink. His story highlights how a brain-computer interface (BCI) could help restore the ability to communicate for people with severe speech impairment.

In a post on X, Kenneth, the second person to receive the implant in January 2026, demonstrated how the system works. He thinks of the sentences, and the device speaks them for him in his original voice. Kenneth was gradually losing his ability to speak due to ALS.

Neuralink has launched a Voice clinical trial to investigate how a brain-computer interface can restore communication for people who can no longer speak. Nir Even Chen, Head of BCI Applications at Neuralink, said the company’s device records neural activity from the brain region involved in speech execution.

According to Chen, the Neuralink device functions like a single neuron recording system that captures signals from thousands of channels simultaneously.

In the post, Kenneth explained that he began facing increasing difficulty as he gradually lost his ability to speak. He decided to enrol for the implant the day he saw that Neuralink had opened its patient registry for people living with ALS.

Skyler Grabatir, a machine learning engineer at Neuralink, explained that patients with ALS are unable to transmit signals from their brain to their muscles. The BCI bypasses this pathway entirely. Instead, it reads signals directly from the brain and sends them to a device, allowing users to perform actions they want to do.

What the surgery and recovery process looked like

Kenneth’s partner described the experience, saying he underwent surgery and returned home the very next day. According to them, the process went smoothly. After the surgery, the training process moved through several phases.

In the first phase, which started immediately after surgery, Neuralink engineers showed Kenneth how to use the charger and the app. They also guided him to say several sentences. The data collected during this stage helped map his neural intent to the actual words.

Engineers explained that after receiving the implant, patients often experiment with different behaviours to find what works best. Kenneth was encouraged to slowly enunciate individual words while training the system.

In February 2026, the second phase began. Neuralink engineers collected sentence data from Kenneth and trained their models. During this phase, the system decoded his silent mouth movements. The goal was for Kenneth to silently move his mouth while the BCI interpreted his speech.

In the third phase, the system advanced further by decoding imagined speech, without any mouth movement. At this stage, Kenneth was able to communicate simply by thinking the words.

Kenneth is currently continuing to participate in the research and regularly provides feedback to Neuralink to help improve the brain-computer interface technology.
