iPhone 18 Pro Max May Get Full Satellite Internet from Space

Key Takeaways

  • Apple is reportedly developing full 5G satellite internet for iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a foldable model.
  • The feature could enable complete internet access from space, moving beyond current limited satellite services.
  • A potential deal with SpaceX is back in discussion, while current partner Globalstar faces uncertainty.

Apple’s next-generation iPhones might break free from terrestrial networks entirely. According to a report from The Information, the company is developing full 5G satellite internet support for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone.

This would be a significant leap from the current satellite features limited to Emergency SOS, Find My, and messaging. The new capability promises complete internet access from space.

“Apple plans to add support in upcoming iPhones as early as next year for 5G networks that aren’t tethered to Earth’s surface, which includes satellites…That would give the iPhone full internet access over satellite,” the report noted.

The standard iPhone 18 model is also expected to gain this feature, but its launch is reportedly shifted to around March 2027. The Pro variants and the foldable iPhone are slated for a September 2026 release.

Apple and SpaceX: A Renewed Partnership?

The report suggests a potential collaboration with SpaceX is back on the table. SpaceX now supports the same radio spectrum Apple uses for its current satellite features. While Apple currently relies on Globalstar, recent developments hint at a change.

Globalstar’s executive chairman has reportedly discussed selling the company for over $10 billion. Its recent earnings also warn about the financial impact of losing a major customer, potentially Apple.

This potential deal comes despite recent tensions between Apple and SpaceX owner Elon Musk, who had previously filed a lawsuit and criticized Apple’s AI partnerships. It remains to be seen if the two tech giants can finalise an agreement for this groundbreaking feature.
