Hack of the day: Encrypt your WhatsApp backup too

When it comes to privacy, most WhatsApp users assume their chats are fully protected thanks to end-to-end encryption. That’s true while messages are being sent, but there’s a hidden gap: cloud backups. By default, your WhatsApp backup stored on Google Drive or iCloud isn’t encrypted in the same way, meaning your conversations and media could be exposed if someone gains access to your cloud account. This is where WhatsApp’s end-to-end encrypted backup feature comes in. It ensures that your messages remain secure not only during transmission but also when stored, giving you complete control over your data. Think of it as locking your diary with a second padlock — even if someone gets into your storage, they won’t be able to read your private notes without the key.

How to do it

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.

  2. Tap Chats, then Chat backup.

  3. Select End-to-end encrypted backup.

  4. Turn it on and create a passkey, password, or 64-digit encryption key.

  5. Store your recovery method safely to avoid losing access later.

Important tip

If you forget your password or lose the encryption key, recovery can be extremely difficult. Set up encryption only after deciding where and how you’ll securely store your recovery details.
