Google Gemini 3 AI Launches with Revolutionary Thinking Search Feature

Google Launches Gemini 3 AI with “Thinking” Search Feature

Google has unveiled Gemini 3, its next-generation artificial intelligence model, integrating it directly into its dominant search engine to create what executives call a “true thought partner” for users. The new AI aims to enhance productivity and creativity through advanced conversational capabilities.

Key Takeaways

  • Gemini 3 introduces a revolutionary “thinking” feature within Google Search
  • Initial rollout limited to Gemini Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US
  • Google’s parent company Alphabet has increased AI spending to $93 billion
  • AI Overviews already serve over 2 billion users monthly

Next-Generation AI Capabilities

Gemini 3 represents Google’s response to competitive threats from OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, which emerged in late 2022. The new model features enhanced reasoning abilities designed to provide “smart, concise and direct” responses that offer genuine insight rather than flattery.

“We like to think this will help anyone bring any idea to life,” said Koray Kavukcuoglu, a Google executive overseeing Gemini’s technology.

Google executives emphasize they’ve built guardrails to prevent hallucinations and malicious use, addressing concerns that have plagued other AI systems with instances of misleading information and inappropriate responses.

Massive AI Investment Race

The Gemini 3 launch comes amid unprecedented spending on AI technology. Alphabet recently raised its capital expenditure budget from $91 billion to $93 billion, with most funds directed toward AI development. This places Google in direct competition with Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, all making massive AI investments.

Investors have largely rewarded this spending, propelling Alphabet’s market value to approximately $3.4 trillion—more than double its value when the first Gemini launched in late 2023. However, concerns about a potential AI investment bubble persist.

Transforming Search into Conversation

Google’s strategic shift positions its search engine as an “answer engine” that could reduce dependence on traditional web results. The company began this transformation in 2023 with AI Overviews and expanded earlier this year with “AI mode.”

The new “thinking” option in AI mode promises more in-depth answers, though it will initially be exclusive to paying subscribers before becoming available to all users. This evolution has concerned online publishers who rely on search traffic for advertising revenue, as Google increasingly emphasizes AI-generated summaries over website rankings.

Despite these concerns, Google’s AI initiatives show strong adoption, with AI Overviews serving over 2 billion monthly users compared to 650 million for the standalone Gemini app.
