Google adds AI avatars and custom music tools to Vids, makes text-to-video generator free for all

Google has added a bunch of new features to its AI-based video generation platform, Google Vids. Users will now get options for custom music generation and AI avatars for anchor-led videos. With the addition of these two new features, the company has also opened its text-to-video generation capability to free users. Earlier, the capability was only available to paid subscribers.

This comes at a time when OpenAI has pushed its Sora video creation platform, while Elon Musk is promoting Grok Imagine, a video generation tool from xAI.

Talking about the biggest changes first, Google personal account users can now generate 8-second-long videos for free. However, Google has currently capped free video generation to 10 videos every month. These users can use Google’s latest video generation model, Veo 3.1, to convert their ideas into high-quality videos from a simple prompt.

Custom music generation with Lyria models

For users who want to add custom music to their videos, Google has brought its Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models to Google Vids. This newly added feature will allow Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers to generate music ranging from short 30-second clips to three-minute tracks. However, this feature is not available to free users.

AI avatars for anchor-led videos

Additionally, the newly added AI avatar feature will enable users to generate anchor-led videos. These AI anchors will have a consistent face and voice that can be used across multiple clips and projects. Users can place them in specific scenes, and the AI anchor will also interact with uploaded objects. Google has also provided users with control over the AI avatar, allowing them to swap outfits and change backgrounds. However, this feature is currently available only for paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

In addition to these features, Google has rolled out new tools to help users create and share videos from Google Vids. Users will now get a Screen Recorder Chrome extension for free, which will allow them to record their screen and themselves from anywhere on the web.

Google has also enabled users to upload their videos directly from Google Vids to YouTube, eliminating the extra steps involved in rendering and downloading the video.
