Coal India and IIT Madras Launch Sustainable Energy Centre

Coal India Limited (CIL) has partnered with IIT Madras to establish a Centre for Sustainable Energy, marking a significant step in India’s clean energy transition.

Key Partnership Details

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Achyut Ghatak, CIL’s Director (Technical), and V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. The centre will be located at the IIT Madras campus.

Research Focus Areas

The collaboration will drive innovation in sustainable energy through:

  • Repurposing coal mines for sustainable use
  • Developing low-carbon technologies
  • Transforming coal into valuable clean energy feedstock
  • Building research capacity and human capital

Supported by CIL’s funding, the initiative aligns with the company’s strategic diversification and India’s net-zero 2070 target.

Leadership Perspectives

P.M. Prasad, CIL Chairman, emphasized: “This MoU marks a historic step in Coal India’s journey toward sustainable growth. Through this collaboration with IIT Madras, Coal India aims to generate indigenous solutions that ensure energy security, decarbonization, and socioeconomic progress.”

Director Kamakoti added: “The partnership with Coal India epitomises the institute’s commitment to this cause. Together, we aim to develop scalable and impactful solutions that support India’s sustainable energy future.”

Human Capital Development

The centre will nurture future energy leaders through PhD, postdoctoral, and internship programs, creating the next generation of researchers and engineers for India’s green transformation.
