Cloudflare Outage: Single Bad File Caused Global Internet Disruption

Key Takeaways

  • A single corrupted configuration file caused a major Cloudflare outage affecting global internet services
  • The incident lasted approximately six hours and impacted major platforms including ChatGPT and X
  • Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince issued a public apology for the service disruption

Cloudflare has identified a single problematic configuration file as the root cause behind Tuesday’s widespread internet outage that knocked numerous major websites offline. The technical failure disrupted services across the global internet infrastructure for approximately six hours.

What Caused the Cloudflare Outage?

The incident originated from Cloudflare’s “feature file” – a critical security component that updates systems against potential threats. Due to a system change, the company’s database began inserting duplicate entries into this file, causing it to rapidly double in size beyond processing limits.

When this oversized file distributed across Cloudflare’s global network, the software responsible for reading it failed to process the excessive data. This cascade failure resulted in widespread service disruptions affecting seemingly unrelated websites and platforms.

Initial Response and Resolution

Cloudflare initially suspected a major cyber attack before identifying the internal configuration error. The company resolved the issue by updating the problematic file, with full restoration occurring about six hours after the outage began.

Official Apology from Cloudflare Leadership

Matthew Prince, Cloudflare’s CEO, expressed regret in a public statement: “We are sorry for the impact to our customers and to the Internet in general. Given Cloudflare’s importance in the Internet ecosystem any outage of any of our systems is unacceptable.”

He added, “That there was a period of time where our network was not able to route traffic is deeply painful to every member of our team. We know we let you down today.”
