ChatGPT Leads AI Chatbot Market Despite Growing Competition

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT maintains market dominance with 74.1% share despite 13-point decline
  • Google Gemini emerges as strong #2 contender with 12.9% market share
  • Perplexity AI shows steady growth while DeepSeek and Grok lose ground

OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to lead the global AI chatbot market despite facing intensified competition from both American and Chinese rivals. According to the latest SimilarWeb data, ChatGPT commands 74.1% market share as of October 19th, though it has experienced a significant 13-percentage-point decline over the past year.

Market Share Distribution

Google Gemini has solidified its position as the second most popular chatbot with 12.9% market share, showing substantial growth in recent months. The competition landscape reveals:

  • DeepSeek: 3.7% (down from peak of 6.8%)
  • Perplexity AI: 2.4% (up from 1.7%)
  • Claude: 2.0% (minor increase from 1.7%)
  • Grok AI: 2.0% (down from 3.1%)
  • Copilot: 1.2% (steady from 1.1%)

Rising and Falling Players

Perplexity AI, led by Aravind Srinivas, has demonstrated consistent growth, climbing from 1.7% to 2.4% over the past year. In contrast, DeepSeek has seen the most dramatic decline after peaking at 6.8% six months ago and holding the second position temporarily.

Elon Musk’s Grok AI has also lost momentum, dropping from 3.1% to 2.0% over the past six months, now trailing behind Perplexity. Microsoft’s Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude have maintained relatively stable positions with minor fluctuations.

Competitive Landscape Shifts

The data indicates that while ChatGPT’s dominance remains unchallenged, competitors are gradually eroding its market leadership. DeepSeek’s early success with its global rollout challenged Western AI supremacy but the Chinese model has struggled to maintain momentum amid continuous new model launches from OpenAI, Google, and other players.

The AI chatbot market continues to evolve rapidly, with Google Gemini emerging as the most significant threat to ChatGPT’s long-term market leadership.
