France’s Special Envoy for Artificial Intelligence, Anne Bouverot, has commended India’s approach to AI governance, noting its alignment with France’s strategy of balancing innovation with necessary regulation.
Speaking to ANI on Thursday, Bouverot emphasized that both countries share similar priorities in protecting citizens while advancing technology, and expressed France’s willingness to collaborate on AI ethics and accountability frameworks.
“We’re very willing to collaborate. Nobody gives lessons to anyone. I think we ourselves are trying to find the right balance between innovation and regulation,” she said. “In France, it’s very important to protect personal data and privacy–it’s part of our history. But equally, it’s very important to innovate and have startups and companies grow in the AI space. This is the same spirit we see in India, and we hope to help strengthen that balance between innovation and regulation to protect our citizens, children, and workers,” Bouverot added.
Strengthening Bilateral AI Cooperation
The collaboration builds on engagements following the AI Action Summit in France earlier this year. Bouverot highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Station F, Paris’s largest startup incubator, during his February state visit.
She confirmed that President Macron’s upcoming India visit in February will include French AI startups and companies seeking partnerships with Indian counterparts. Bouverot is also meeting with key members of India’s AI ecosystem during her current visit.
2026: Year of French-Indian Innovation
Bouverot officially declared 2026 as the year of French-Indian innovation, signaling deeper collaboration between the two nations’ technology ecosystems.
“2026 will be the year of French-Indian innovation. And that’s a great opportunity to get our ecosystems, our startups, to work together,” she was quoted as saying.
India is set to host the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi from February 19-20. Announced by PM Modi at the France AI Action Summit, this will be the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South, marking a significant milestone in international AI governance discussions.
