Andrej Karpathy uses AI agent to do household chores, it is called Dobby the Elf Claw

Andrej Karpathy, founder of Eureka Labs who also co-founded OpenAI and previously served as Director of AI at Tesla, recently shared how an AI agent called “Dobby” helps manage some of his household chores.

Speaking on the No Priors podcast, Karpathy explained that the AI system, nicknamed “Dobby the Elf Claw,” inspired by the house elf from the Harry Potter series, controls several systems inside his home. These include lights, HVAC, shades, pool, spa, and the security system.

Artificial intelligence has already transformed the internet and is now starting to appear more frequently in everyday life. Traditional voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant usually require users to give instructions before performing any action.

However, the rise of generative AI and large language models is enabling a new type of system known as AI agents. Unlike basic assistants, these systems function as more sophisticated, action-oriented tools rather than simple chatbots.

Karpathy said the AI agent also tracks deliveries arriving at his home. When a FedEx truck pulls up outside, the system sends him an image through WhatsApp asking him to check the delivery. He added that the setup allowed him to remove six different apps from his phone, as the AI agent now controls those functions in one place.

What exactly is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a generative AI-enabled tool that uses models such as GPT or Claude as its core system. Unlike AI chatbots that mainly respond to text prompts, AI agents can perform a wider range of tasks. For example, they can read and write files, execute shell commands, browse the web, send emails and control local applications.

This makes them capable of carrying out more complex and action-based workflows.

AI agents have gained popularity with open-source frameworks such as OpenClaw, which helped popularise this approach. As a result, several AI companies are now working to build competing tools.

Despite their growing popularity, AI agents also raise security and operational concerns. These include potential risks such as data breaches, misuse of tools, and unintended actions by automated systems.

Karpathy said he runs his AI agent on a GB300 superchip designed for agentic AI workloads. Dobby connects to devices on his home’s local network, meaning those systems are not directly accessible from the internet.

AI agents are not limited to managing household tasks. There are also platforms being built specifically for them to interact. One such platform is Moltbook, described as a social network designed exclusively for AI agents. On the platform, AI agents can share, discuss, and upvote information. Humans are not allowed to post on Moltbook.
