AMD Projects $1 Trillion Data Center Chip Market by 2030 Driven by AI

Key Takeaways

  • AMD projects the data center chip market to reach $1 trillion by 2030, driven by AI demand.
  • The company is launching its MI400 AI chip series in 2026 and expanding through strategic acquisitions.
  • A major OpenAI deal is expected to generate over $100 billion in revenue for AMD over four years.

AMD CEO Lisa Su has announced the company expects the global data center chip market to soar to $1 trillion by 2030. She revealed this ambitious projection during AMD’s analyst day in New York, highlighting artificial intelligence as the primary growth driver.

“It’s an exciting market,” Su said. “There’s no question, data center is the largest growth opportunity out there, and one that AMD is very, very well positioned for.”

Competitive Landscape and Market Projections

While AMD expands its AI business, rival Nvidia continues to dominate data center chip market share. AMD has maintained strength in the CPU segment, steadily gaining ground against Intel.

Notably, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has projected an even larger $3-4 trillion AI infrastructure market by 2030.

AMD’s Product Roadmap and Acquisitions

The company’s next-generation MI400 AI chip series, scheduled for 2026 launch, will feature variants tailored for scientific applications and generative AI. AMD also plans to introduce complete server racks similar to Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72.

Su emphasized AMD’s aggressive acquisition strategy, describing the company as having built “an M&A machine.” Recent purchases include server builder ZT Systems and multiple AI software startups.

“We’ll continue to do AI software tuck-ins,” said Chief Strategy Officer Mat Hein.

He explained these strategic acquisitions ensure AMD accesses necessary software expertise and talent to strengthen its AI capabilities.

Financial Performance and OpenAI Partnership

AMD recently forecast fourth-quarter revenue exceeding Wall Street expectations, with AI chip demand driving optimism. The company’s data center CPU business has also benefited from increased AI-related spending.

In a significant development, AMD secured a multiyear agreement with ChatGPT creator OpenAI in October. The deal is projected to deliver over $100 billion in new revenue over four years from OpenAI and other customers.

As part of the arrangement, OpenAI received warrants to purchase up to 10% stake in AMD. This partnership represents a crucial large-customer win for AMD, which hasn’t yet matched Nvidia’s extraordinary returns from the AI spending boom.
