Adobe has officially launched Turntable in Adobe Illustrator, a feature that allows designers to instantly generate multi-angle, three-dimensional (3D) views from any two-dimensional (2D) vector illustration, without having to manually redraw a single frame. The feature, which was first previewed as a sneak peek at the Adobe MAX conference in October 2024, has been refined through a beta programme and is now generally available to all Illustrator users.
“With Turntable, you can instantly generate multi-angle views from any vector illustration, bringing motion to characters and designs, and eliminate the need for repetitive manual redraws. What once took hours now happens in seconds, making it easier and more fun for designers and animators to turn static artwork into dynamic, expressive visuals,” said Deepa Subramaniam, vice president, product marketing, Creative Cloud, Adobe.
What is Adobe Illustrator’s Turntable feature
At its core, Turntable solves a problem that has long frustrated animators and designers: the long process of manually recreating the same character or object from multiple angles for use in animation, games, or production assets.
With Turntable, a designer can upload a single vector illustration and the tool automatically generates up to 74 editable views of that asset, covering full rotation and vertical tilt.
Adobe says that each of those views remains a fully editable vector, meaning designers can adjust, refine and export them just as they would any other Illustrator file.
One of Turntable’s practical strengths is how it fits into existing creative pipelines. Adobe has built in a direct handoff to After Effects, meaning teams can move from a finished multi-angle design straight into motion work without interrupting their workflow or switching between incompatible formats.
Subramaniam described Turntable as part of a broader wave of innovation coming to Illustrator, alongside faster overall performance, expanded AI-powered features like Generative Shape Fill, and tighter integration with motion tools.
How to generate multiple views using Turntable
-
Use the Selection tool to select the object that you want to view from new angles. Adobe says Turntable works best with vector and raster objects without a background that have recognisable angles in a real-world scenario.
-
Select Object > Generative > Turntable. Turntable generates multiple views:
-
A Generative Object appears on the canvas to which it links all the views. The Turntable control bar also appears with the required controls. A Generative Object group appears in the Layers panel. Illustrator also keeps a copy of the original object as a group.
-
In the control bar, move the slider to turn the Generative Object sideways up to 180 degrees in either direction.
-
Use the Tilt the artwork up or Tilt the artwork down arrow to tilt the Generative Object 30 degrees up or down for a top-down or bottom-up view. You can turn it sideways even when tilted up or down, giving you access to a broader range of viewing angles.
During the beta period, Adobe says the feature was quickly adopted across a range of creative workflows. Animation teams used Turntable to speed up character turnarounds for pitch decks — a task that typically requires drawing a character from the front, side, back, and multiple angles in between. Game designers used it to generate 360-degree concept art for new projects. Social media teams found they could create GIFs and micro-animations directly within Illustrator in a fraction of the usual time.
