Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen is stepping down after 18 years, Satya Nadella calls him a legend

Adobe has announced that its CEO, Shantanu Narayen, will be vacating his role. Narayen’s departure comes at a time when investors are concerned over Adobe’s position amid the rapid developments in AI. He has served as the company’s chief since December 2007.

Following the announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared a wholesome post on X, praising Narayen and the work he has done at Adobe.

Satya Nadella calls Adobe CEO a legend

Nadella claimed that Shantanu played a major role in making Adobe one of the most important software companies in the world. He wrote, “Congrats Shantanu, on a legendary run at Adobe! You’ve built one of the most important software companies in the world, and expanded what’s possible for creators, entrepreneurs, and brands everywhere.”

The Microsoft chief insisted that Narayen was more than an industry peer, and often acted as his mentor. He added, “Grateful for your friendship, mentorship, and for all you’ve done for Adobe and for our industry,”

Why is Shantanu Narayen leaving Adobe?

Narayen will stay as CEO until a successor is identified and will continue as chair of the board. Adobe is facing questions about its long-term strategy in the era of artificial intelligence. AI image generation tools such as Google’s Nano Banana have made it easier for users to edit images without having to need apps such as Adobe’s Photoshop.

Shantanu Narayen informed Adobe employees via a statement. He said, “This is not a goodbye by any means but a time for reflection.”

The company has been working on its own AI products such as Firefly. According to Adobe, it has seen a rapid adoption of its AI-first products from users, with annual recurring revenue from offerings like Firefly more than tripling over the previous year. Narayen reinforced the company’s forward-looking approach, stating, “The next era of creativity is being written right now—shaped by AI, by new workflows and by entirely new forms of expression,”

Shantanu Narayen’s role at Adobe

During Narayen’s tenure, Adobe expanded from roughly 3,000 employees to more than 30,000 and saw revenue rise from less than $1 billion to over $25 billion.

Adobe’s creative suite became the go-to suite of apps for creators, including apps such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

Shantanu Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as vice president and general manager of the company’s engineering technology group. He was promoted to president and COO in 2005, before taking over as the CEO in 2007. Narayen was named the chairman of the board in 2017.

Before joining Adobe, Shantanu held product development roles at Apple and Silicon Graphics. He also co-founded a photo-sharing startup, Pictra.

Adobe’s website states that Narayen holds five patents. He has a master’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University as well as a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley. He also has a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Osmania University.
