Union Budget 2026 Proposes Rs 15,000 Crore Khelo India Mission
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a massive Rs 15,000 crore push for sports in the Union Budget 2026-27. The new ‘Khelo India Mission’ aims to transform India into a top-10 sporting nation by the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Key Takeaways
- Massive Funding: Rs 15,000 crore allocated over five years.
- Core Focus: Grassroots development, high-performance systems, and sports infrastructure.
- Major Infrastructure: 50 Olympic Training Centres, 500 synthetic tracks, and 1,000 indoor stadiums planned.
- Long-term Goal: Boost India’s medal tally at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
A Three-Pillar Strategy
The mission is a major upgrade from the existing Khelo India programme. It will focus on three key areas to build a complete sports ecosystem.
“Our vision is to make India a top-10 sporting nation by 2032. The Khelo India Mission will be a game-changer, providing end-to-end support to our athletes from playground to podium,” Sitharaman said in her budget speech in Parliament.
Building World-Class Infrastructure
A cornerstone of the plan is establishing 50 ‘Khelo India Olympic Training Centres’ nationwide. These will offer specialised coaching, sports science, and rehabilitation. Additionally, the budget funds 500 new synthetic athletic tracks and 1,000 modern indoor stadiums across rural and urban areas.
Nurturing Talent from the Ground Up
To identify champions early, sports will be integrated more robustly into school curricula. A ‘Khelo India Talent Identification Portal’ will be launched. The mission also promises increased scholarships for promising athletes and better pension schemes for retired sportspersons.
Boosting the Sports Economy
Recognising the economic potential, the budget proposes incentives for private investment in sports leagues, sporting goods manufacturing, and sports tourism. A new ‘National Sports Technology Mission’ will drive innovation in equipment and analytics.
Positive Reaction from the Sports Community
The announcement has been welcomed.
“This is a historic budget for Indian sports. The scale and vision of the Khelo India Mission can fundamentally alter our sporting landscape if implemented effectively,” said a former Olympian.
This enhanced focus builds on India’s improved performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The immediate goal is a double-digit medal haul at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, setting the stage for a major breakthrough in Brisbane 2032.
