NADA Clears Doubles Shuttler MR Arjun of Doping Charges Ahead of Paris Olympics
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has cleared Indian badminton player MR Arjun of doping charges, allowing him to compete in the upcoming Paris Olympics. The Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel ruled that a contaminated protein powder was the source of the banned substance.
Key Takeaways
- MR Arjun is cleared to compete in the Paris Olympics with partner Dhruv Kapila.
- NADA’s panel found the banned substance terbutaline came from a contaminated supplement.
- The violation was ruled unintentional, with Arjun exercising “utmost caution.”
- The Arjun-Kapila pair is India’s second men’s doubles team to qualify for Paris.
Timeline of the Case
The 26-year-old shuttler was provisionally suspended on March 8 after a urine sample collected on February 14 tested positive. He was charged under anti-doping rule ADR 2.1 for the presence of a prohibited substance.
However, in its July 10 order, the ADDP accepted Arjun’s explanation. The panel concluded he successfully proved the violation was not intentional and the substance entered his system via a contaminated protein powder.
“The panel is of the view that the athlete has successfully established that the ADRV (anti-doping rule violation) was not intentional and that the prohibited substance entered his system through a contaminated product,” the ADDP said in its order.
“The panel is also satisfied that the athlete exercised utmost caution and was not negligent in any way. The athlete has thus discharged his burden of proof.”
Contamination Evidence
The disciplinary panel noted the concentration of terbutaline found was “very low” and “consistent with contamination,” supporting the athlete’s claim. This ruling lifts the cloud over Arjun’s Olympic participation just weeks before the Games.
Olympic Qualification Status
Arjun and Dhruv Kapila qualified for Paris based on their world ranking of No. 23. They join the top-ranked pair of as India’s men’s doubles representatives, marking a significant moment for Indian badminton.
