The Chicago Bears moved quickly to stabilize their offensive line after a surprising development shook the locker room. Veteran center Drew Dalman abruptly announced his retirement, leaving a major gap in the protection unit that had played a key role in the team’s recent progress. Within days, the Bears responded with a trade that could reshape their offensive front while helping safeguard the future of young quarterback Caleb Williams.
The sudden news clearly affected Williams, who had developed a strong connection with Dalman during the past season. As the team worked behind the scenes to address the roster change, the quarterback publicly shared his emotions. His reaction quickly caught the attention of fans, highlighting how significant Dalman’s presence had been both on the field and inside the locker room.
Chicago Bears move quickly after Drew Dalman retirement
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Chicago wasted little time making a roster move. Schefter reported the trade details on social media, writing, “Comp update: Bears are trading a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Patriots for Garrett Bradbury.”
The deal brings veteran center Garrett Bradbury to Chicago from the New England Patriots. Bradbury originally entered the league as a first round draft pick in 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings.
After spending time in Minnesota, he joined the Patriots in 2025 and started every game during the season, including their appearance in Super Bowl LX.
Chicago wants Bradbury to take over for Dalman, but it won’t be easy to match that level of play. Last season, Dalman was one of the best centers in the league and helped keep Williams safe. The Bears’ sack totals went down a lot thanks to the offensive line’s strong play. Williams was sacked 68 times in 2024, but that number dropped to just 24 in 2025 because the protection got better.
The emotional impact of Dalman’s retirement was clear in Williams’ public response. The quarterback posted a sad emoji alongside a simple tribute. Later he explained the nickname he used for his teammate, saying, “I call Drew Dalman the Hulk.”
Williams also praised Dalman’s leadership and ability on the field. “He’s the brains behind it all, but when he gets out there on the field, he’s strong as can be, fast, and the right guy for the job for us and for my future and our future here.”
Dalman’s retirement remains somewhat mysterious, as he has not publicly explained his decision. Yet the Bears appear determined to move forward quickly. By adding Bradbury, Chicago signals that protecting its young franchise quarterback remains the organization’s top priority heading into the next season.
