A. J. Brown did not hide his feelings. While trade chatter links the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver to the New England Patriots, he admitted he once strongly disliked Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel during their Tennessee Titans years.
The comment did not come from a rumor mill or anonymous source. Brown said it himself on the podcast “Dudes on Dudes,” hosted by Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski. The quote spread quickly because it sounded harsh. The full explanation tells a different story.
A.J. Brown explains why he once disliked New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel but now respects him
Brown described Vrabel as demanding and direct when they worked together from 2019 through 2021. He said, “He’s gonna call on you in the meetings. He wanna make sure that you’re staying engaged… At the time, I didn’t really like Vrabe. I didn’t like him. I admit that, he knows that. So, [in my notebook] I used to write ‘I hate Vrabe. I hate Vrabe. I hate Vrabe. ’ Right? But, I was doing that to pretend like I was taking notes to look like I was engaged… He was so hard on me when I was rookie… I didn’t really understand what he was trying to push me to be. “
Brown later clarified that his perspective changed once he understood Vrabel’s coaching style. He added, “When I say he holds every single player accountable from top to bottom, I don’t care who it is; that’s who he is, and it makes the team come together because nobody is bigger than the team, nobody is bigger than the program, so you have to respect it.”
That context matters. Brown was a rookie learning a demanding system. Vrabel was establishing authority. The friction was real, but so was the growth. Brown topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons with Tennessee and made a Pro Bowl in Year 2. The Titans reached the playoffs in all three seasons they worked together.
Patriots speculation grows after A.J. Brown jokingly fuels rumors during podcast appearance
Trade talk intensified after a playful exchange on the show. Edelman joked, “Just remember, we’re all Patriots. ” Gronkowski then asked if Brown planned to join them. Brown laughed, said “No!” repeatedly, and clarified, “I’m trolling,” according to Jordy McElroy of Patriots Wire.
The timing of those jokes matters. Reports Thursday indicated Philadelphia is not rushing to move Brown this offseason. He also signed a three-year, $96 Million extension with $84 Million guaranteed in 2024. That contract limits realistic trade scenarios.
Speculation persists because of roster logic. New England reached Super Bowl LX in Mike Vrabel’s first season and wants more weapons for quarterback Drake Maye. Analysts continue linking Brown because of his production history and his prior relationship with Vrabel. Moe Morton of Bleacher Report even proposed a hypothetical deal involving a 2026 third-round pick and cornerback Carlton Davis III.
For now, there is noise but no confirmed negotiations. Brown’s own words suggest respect for Vrabel, not a push to reunite. Until a team makes an offer or Philadelphia signals a shift, the situation remains talk, not action.
