This US company will deliver sunlight at night. Here’s how much it will cost

A California-based startup, Reflect Orbital, is drawing global attention, and controversy, with an ambitious idea: delivering sunlight to Earth even after sunset using satellites equipped with giant mirrors.

The concept, which recently went viral online, involves placing satellites in a sun-synchronous orbit about 600–625 km above Earth.

These satellites would remain in constant sunlight as they travel along the boundary between day and night, known as the terminator line. Using large reflective surfaces made of lightweight materials like Mylar, the spacecraft would redirect sunlight to specific locations on Earth.

The idea has captured public imagination, with the company claiming that around 2.6 lakh people have already expressed interest. The service has been likened to “ordering sunlight” on demand through an app, though its real-world applications are more industrial than consumer-focused.

Each satellite mirror, ranging from 10 to 54 metres, would provide only brief illumination, about four minutes per pass, covering an area roughly 5 kilometres wide.

The brightness, estimated between 0.8 and 2.3 lux, would be comparable to moonlight, not daylight.

Reflect Orbital says the technology could extend solar power generation by lighting up solar farms after sunset, support remote industrial operations, and assist in disaster response by providing temporary illumination in areas without electricity. The company is already planning a prototype mission, Earendil-1, which aims to demonstrate the concept in orbit.

However, the proposal has triggered significant scientific and environmental concerns. Astronomers warn that additional artificial light in the night sky could worsen light pollution, interfering with observations of distant stars and galaxies.

Ecologists also caution that even low levels of artificial illumination could disrupt nocturnal wildlife, affecting migration, feeding, and reproduction cycles.

Public reaction has been mixed. While some see it as a bold step in space-based innovation, others have raised alarms about interfering with natural cycles. Critics argue that altering night-time environments, even temporarily, could have unintended consequences.

The project also raises questions about space sustainability. Reflect Orbital’s long-term vision includes deploying thousands of satellites, intensifying concerns about orbital congestion and debris.

While the science behind reflecting sunlight is well understood, turning it into a scalable, safe, and economically viable service remains a major challenge.

For now, the idea of “sunlight at night” sits between innovation and uncertainty, as the world watches whether this futuristic concept can move from theory to reality.
