Russian cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov manually docked the Soyuz cargo spacecraft successfully with the International Space Station (ISS) after a technical issue.
The glitch forced a rare manual intervention by a cosmonaut, highlighting both the risks and resilience of space operations.
The uncrewed freighter, launched atop a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on March 22, initially followed a normal trajectory toward the ISS. However, shortly after separating from the rocket, one of its key antennas, needed for automatic docking, failed to deploy, according to Nasa.
The malfunction meant the spacecraft could not rely on its automated docking system, a standard feature used to safely connect with the orbiting laboratory. Instead, Russian cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov stepped in to guide the spacecraft manually.
Using onboard controls and real-time video feeds, Kud-Sverchkov carefully piloted the Progress MS-33 toward the station’s Poisk module, executing a precise docking maneuver under challenging conditions.
Manual docking is considered significantly more complex and is rarely required, as modern spacecraft are designed to operate autonomously.
Despite the setback, the spacecraft docked safely, ensuring that vital supplies, including food, fuel, and equipment, reached the ISS without delay.
Nasa officials noted that while the antenna issue posed a risk, backup systems and human expertise helped avert a more serious situation.
The ISS relies heavily on regular cargo missions like Progress to sustain crew operations and maintain station systems. Any disruption can have ripple effects on mission timelines and onboard resources.
The successful manual docking shows the importance of astronaut training and redundancy in space missions. While automation dominates modern spaceflight, this incident serves as a reminder that human skill remains a critical safeguard when systems fail.
Engineers are now expected to analyse the antenna malfunction to prevent similar issues in future missions, as international partners continue to depend on reliable cargo deliveries to keep the ISS running smoothly.
