Mysterious object seen flying over European countries. Space agency investigating

A mysterious bright object streaking across the skies of several European countries on Sunday evening has sparked widespread curiosity and prompted an investigation by the European Space Agency.

The spectacular fireball was seen at around on March 8, dazzling observers across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Witnesses described an intensely bright object racing across the sky from the southwest to the northeast, leaving behind a glowing trail before breaking apart.

According to preliminary analysis by ESA’s Planetary Defence team, the object was most likely a small natural space rock that entered Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. Experts estimate the object may have been up to a few metres in diameter before it burned up during atmospheric entry.

The fiery streak remained visible for around six seconds, an unusually long duration for a meteor event, making it easily noticeable across a wide region.

Numerous videos of the phenomenon quickly surfaced online as people captured the glowing object using mobile phones and security cameras.

The event was also recorded by scientific monitoring systems, including cameras from the European AllSky7 Fireball Network, which track bright meteors across Europe. Scientists are now analysing these recordings to reconstruct the object’s trajectory and determine where any surviving fragments may have landed.

Reports suggest that small meteorite fragments may have struck a house in Koblenz-Guls, a district in the German city of Koblenz. Authorities say there have been no reports of injuries, though investigations are ongoing to confirm whether the debris came from the same event.

Despite the dramatic display, experts say such incidents are not extremely rare. Objects of this size are believed to strike Earth every few weeks to every few years, though most burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere.

Interestingly, the timing and direction of the fireball suggest it likely approached Earth from a bright region of the sky near sunset, making it difficult for ground-based telescopes to detect beforehand. To date, astronomers have successfully detected only 11 natural objects before they entered Earth’s atmosphere.

ESA scientists say projects like the Flyeye asteroid survey telescope are being developed to improve early detection of such objects and strengthen planetary defence capabilities in the future.
